The decline of the native Bob White Quail led to the establishment of the hunting preserve in 1974 to restore the quail population and as a side line to farming. Now where cotton, peaches, corn and soybeans were grown, the 3500 acre farm is planted in switch grass, love grass, small grains, clover, partridge pea, and bi color lespedeza strictly for wildlife management.

The land that is Buckeye Plantation was originally the Brack Plantation, established by Benjamin Brack in the late 1830's or early 1840's. How or when Brack settled the land is uncertain, but Brack most likely won the land in a series of State land lotteries in the 1820's and 1830's. An 1850 census states the Brack Plantation had 3 whites named with the surname of Brack and 44 slaves present. Mr. Brack and his family now rest in a cemetery on the South side of the property, where evidence of the early cotton terraces remain in the piney woods.

The Gopher Plantation bed and breakfast package is a great get-away which provides a walk back in time to the southern farming culture of the late 1800's and early 1900's. The two plantation cabins were constructed in the 1800's and retain the authenticity of that era. The main plantation lodge was constructed of materials which are at least 100 years old. Every detail of the era is represented in the Gopher Plantation experience. Enjoy a leisurely afternoon in a rocker on the expansive porch of the plantation lodge or explore the farm implements and plantation buildings that are true in every detail of the pre-modern southern farming culture. Even if you are not a hunter you can still enjoy a visit to the Gopher Plantation and experience a time when life was simpler and life's pleasures didn't require an electrical outlet. Visitors can view an extensive array of wildlife resident on the Gopher Plantation. If a wildlife camera safari is more to your liking the Gopher Plantation offers an opportunity second to none. Wildlife that is reclusive and seldom seen are in abundance on the Gopher Plantation and offer the wildlife photographer a rare opportunity to capture these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat.
