Virginia Hunting Guides and Services
The land you hunt has been farmed by our
family for over 100 years and has been
managed for its wildlife, timber, and crops.
Deer hunting, turkey hunting, and dove
hunting have long been local traditions and
more recently bow hunting is fast becoming
a tradition. With specific emphasis placed on
wildlife management, there are many food
plots maintained around the farm, which
provide excellent nutrition for the deer herds
as well as keep the population close to the
hunters. This makes for great VA deer
hunting.

We have approximately 100 blinds from the Maryland-Virginia state line south for approximately thirty miles. We also have blinds in and around the Saxis Wildlife Management area on the Chesapeake Bay. These blinds include marsh blinds, which overlook ponds and creeks. Pole blinds, which are located in the open waters of the bays and sounds. We also have grass boats, floating and portable blinds. Our guides provide you with transportation to and from the blinds. They are licensed Coast Guard Captains with Coast Guard inspected vessels. Your guide will remain near by throughout the hunt to set out decoys, retrieve your birds and relocate you as necessary. We often move a few times throughout the hunt depending on weather conditions, tides and the type of waterfowl you are hunting. It is possible to hunt Puddle ducks, Divers, Sea Ducks, Brant and Geese all in the same day.

Ring Shoots, sometimes called European of Continental Shoots, are hunts where pheasants are driven towards the shooters, who then try to shoot them as they fly overhead. Here's how they work.
We have a Launch Pad in one of our fields. Around the Launch Pad is a Ring of 10 Shooting Stations. Each Station will accommodate 2 Shooters for a maximum of 20. The minimum number of shooters is 10. The total number of pheasants launched will normally be 15 per Shooter, but more can be arranged. The pheasants will be launched one or sometimes two at a time. After one tenth of the birds are launched we will change stands. This is done so that every shooter gets to shoot from every stand. Retrievers outside the Ring will collect the bag.

As a young boy growing up on our family farm, I loved going bird hunting with my grandfather, "Pop", during the cool crisp winter afternoons. After lunch, we would leave his house walking with his white English Setter, "Mac". It never failed that I would get to carry at least four or five quail in my hunting coat that we had harvested during our walk. Unfortunately, I have seen those days become nothing but a fond memory. The dwindling quail population that the entire south has experienced over the last several years has inspired me to bring the traditional old-style 'bird-hunting the way that Pop used to do' back to my family farms.
Hearing the thundering wings of a covey of Bobwhite quail or the cackling of a rooster pheasant rustling out of the thick cover can in no way be replaced. Our goal here at Sportsman's Hunting Preserve is to bring back the tradition of old-style bird hunting that will give hunters the memories of a by-gone era.
Here at Sportsman's Hunting Preserve, we welcome you to bring your own dogs or we will be glad to guide your hunt with our dogs. We look forward to meeting you and to provide you with a safe and enjoyable experience that will provide you with a memory of hunting the way that our forefathers were so fortunate to enjoy.

I have been guiding Hunts for the past 40 years using my German Shorthaired Pointers. In 2000 I purchased my own land and have designed the fields and plant all the crops that grow on them. I am state licensed for a commercial preserve and I ensure that all my hunters are licensed, explain all safety procedures and enforce all state laws so that everyone has a safe and pleasant hunting experience.

Today the farm remains privately owned by Col. Vaughan's decendants. It is still maintained as an exclusive hunting plantation now open to the public. In the early 1990's, Falkland Farms once again became an active plantation. A beef cattle operation and a hunting operation were started. The excellent response to the hunting prompted the complete renovation of the Sydnor House Lodge. The Lodge accommodates hunting guests while they visit the plantation. It is also used year round for a Bed & Breakfast, weddings, receptions, and corporate meetings. Visitors enjoy the comfort of the lodge with its modern conveniences mixed with the antiques and pictures of the past. The staff prepares and serves all of your meals in true Southern fashion and flair.
